What is a Doula? A Doula is a nonclinical support professional who works for you. Doulas hold space for a birthing person; Only you know what is best for you and your baby. Through emotional and physical support a doula aids in empowering the birthing person and helps them to realize that everything they need, is already inside of them. Doulas provide unbiased information tailored to a client's needs and desires, which in turn encourages informed decision making and self-advocacy. A doula will help you to make informed decisions and uphold your autonomy at all times. Doulas are not clinical care providers, they work in mutual respect with the birth team and allied professionals/care providers.

Doulas are proven to significantly reduce cesareans, decrease length of labor, decrease epidural requests, decrease instrumental delivery, decrease narcotic requests, decrease use of pitocin, improve breastfeeding, increase time spent with baby, decrease postpartum depression, and decrease preterm labor.  One of the most important statistics is that with a doula the birthing person was 27% less likely to feel a loss of control in labor (Cochran, 2011).  This labor and birth are yours and as a doula I want to uphold your autonomy and help to ensure it is a powerful experience. While statistics do show positive outcomes, doulas can never promise anything, except to support you the best that they can.
